In the recent years there’s been somewhat of a food hall phenomenon throughout Europe that has evolved from the sophisticated dining experiences in department stores like Harrods in London. The new trend is more cutting-edge and primarily for drinking and eating rather than browsing and shopping. Food halls have become gathering places for diners to find a broader choice of food and drink options, at different price points, all under the same roof. A lot of the cities in Europe have transformed a neglected building or monument into an exciting food destination for locals and tourists alike including London, Barcelona, Florence, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and now, Nice.

La Gare du Sud is a former French railway station located in the city of Nice. The inauguration of the railway station was in 1892 and it served the entire Provence region for nearly a century. The station was closed in December 1991 when it was replaced by the new Nice train station. It remained derelict until 2013.

Today, this 19th century monument has been lovingly restored and is now a stylish food hall. The concept is entirely dedicated to Nice, its locals, and the gastronomy and culture of the region. Not only has this historic building been brought back to life but it’s now giving back to the city of Nice with a beautiful communal and convivial space for both locals and tourists to enjoy.

There is a wide range of restaurants and bars at the Gare du Sud including Aix&Terra (a Provençal delicatessen), Café de Turin (an oyster bar), La Cave du Fromager (cheese and charcuterie), Mad A Nice (local Niçois cuisine), L’Atelier Maison de la Truffe (truffle specialties), La Vie en Rose (bar and tapas), SuperLobster (lobster rolls), IT (an Italian trattoria), Mahata (a Lebanese restaurant), and much more.

La Gare du Sud, the first food hall in France, opened its doors for a soft launch in May 2019. It is open every day, except Monday, from 11am to 12am.
